Bye, Bye, Baby

I'm really going to miss that little guy.

Any thoughts on the big news? Frankly, I'm glad to move on to the next era in KU football. As the saying goes, where there's smoke there's probably somebody smoking.

But thanks for bringing us some nice players and some nice memories, Coach. There's no doubt you left the program better than you found it.

Also, nice win last night against the hapless Bruins. As in the Memphis game, our guys didn't seem terribly inspired... There's a confidence bordering on arrogance about this team, which is not an entirely bad thing, but maybe they'll need a spanking at Tennessee to clear their heads.

* I know he had too many turnovers, but has any KU freshman ever looked less like a freshman than Xavier Henry?

  1. Firing him over some cursing is about the stupidest f*cking thing I've heard of. Bobby Knight can choke people, but don't say some unPC BS?

He's the best coach in the history of the program and had our team back to respectability. We'll be lucky to find someone who is half the recruiter and probably won't see a bowl for another 12 years. Good job, Lew!

  2. With all due respect Scott, maybe you should read the article that Deron linked to earlier...

Seems pretty clear that KU had no other choice here.

I guess I too am glad to move on; even good coaches have limits, and we ought to be in a position to land a pretty good replacement.

That UCLA game was frustrating, but if we play frustratingly and keep on winning, I won't complain too much.

It's funny that our two biggest games have been (arguably) our least inspired and most frustrating. The '08 team (if memory serves) seemed drawn to bright lights & often underperformed against really weak competition; so far this year's crew appears to have the reverse problem...
Hopefully they'll find a little more balance soon.

Oh, any predictions for the Radford game?
    Will we win by 30? 40? 50??

  3. If they'd fired Mangino over "some cursing," that would be stupid. They didn't.

Yancy, in fairness, I don't think Memphis and UCLA really count as marquee games this year -- let's wait and see how they react against the bevy of Top 25 teams on the slate.

  4. Well, I didn't mean to imply that those were marquee games.

Only that it seems to me that our performance declines in proportion to the quality of the opponents. Surely you'd agree that UCLA is a better team than Alcorn St.? In the past better competition has led to better play; this year that simple formula doesn't work.

You're right, though, that the real tests have yet to come; here's hoping that the team steps up when those tests do arrive.

  5. Kid burned his hand on hot grass 7 years ago? Why didn't we act then? Haven't we already accepted it by this point? At some point, the AD knew about it already and made the decision to keep him already, there has to be a statute of limitations on stuff like that.

That still doesn't do anything for me. Sanction him, and if the conduct continues (like it did with Knight) then sh*tcan him.

  6. I agree with SJ that the timing is suspect. No doubt Lew's busting some Machiavelli moves here.

But I'm not real concerned about niceties like statutes of limitations and prior sanctions in this case. This is a millionaire college football coach who's getting a nice golden parachute just in time for Christmas.

It's not just the hand-burning, it's not just the concealment of injuries, it's not just the personal and semi-racist comments, it's not just verbally abusing an innocent parking attendant, it's not just the 1-7 conference season. It's all of it.
