We're Number One!

In the conference, that is.

But I'll take it. What a game!

Thanks to kusports.com for the photo.

This team is fast becoming one of my favorite teams to watch. So many scoring options, such great team play; so many impressive individual efforts (20 rebounds for Cole! Wow).

Great numbers, courtesy of kusports.com:

KU is 12-1 in the Big 12. It’s KU’s best conference 13-game record since the 2001-02 team went 16-0 ... KU has won at least 12 conference games for nine straight seasons. ... KU has won five straight versus OU. ... OU had a 19-game homecourt win streak snapped. OU had won 10 straight league games at home. ... KU is 15-15 at Noble Center. ... Oklahoma, at No. 3 in the AP poll, was the highest ranked team KU has beaten this season and the highest-ranked since beating Memphis (No. 2) in last year’s National Championship game.

  1. You forgot your asterisk, Yance. We'll never get full credit for this win, or for winning the conference -- and that will have seeding implications, unfortunately.

But I'm glad to admit you were right and I was wrong on this one. And as you say, what a great game -- so many momentum swings and circus plays. Yet another classic Big 12 Big Monday.

Cole was strong, Sherron was clutch. And nearly every time Kansas finds that elusive third scorer, we win. This time it was the previously-slumping Tyshawn.

Let me just throw a little cold water on the proceedings, however: I don't like this business of Collins waving off Self's audibles to take circus treys. As streetball freelancers go, Sherron is one of the best there is, and the shots went in this time, but we've seen bad results from his freelance jobs in the past. Nobody should be bigger than the team.

Having said all that, let's pause for a moment to revel in those crazy highlights. On that 3-pointer at the end of the first half, was Reed actually barking at Willie Warren? That kid's got unsuspected reserves of attitude.

  2. ESPN also has a good highlight reel and interview w/ Sherron.

"They say it's a rebuilding year, but I don't think we're rebuilding. We're just playin.'"
