Forget Longwood, Here Comes Valpo

Sorry, YHD. I haven't been able to watch any games yet, and likely won't be able to watch Valparaiso tonight either. We need Aaron D. back (among others)...

Not much to be said about the Longwood game, I guess, but you've gotta love the 113 points -- highest in the Self era. This seems to confirm his prophecy that the team would be fast.

Interesting line from Tyshawn. Six turnovers is really too many against a patsy like Longwood. (I liked his quote after the game: "We just gotta be able to play fast and be less careless. I mean, I guess that’s just me -- saying that to myself.")

But I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt: 17 points, 10 assists and 3 steals more than cancels out those TOs. With Selby out indefinitely and EJ in the doghouse indefinitely, TT's our floor leader, for better or worse.

Odd to see Brady and Mario logging fewer minutes than Travis Releford. And to see people named Jordan Juenemann and Niko Roberts show up in the box score.

MONDAY NIGHT TRAP GAME ALERT: Valpo returns four starters from what was at least a decent team last season, and they're picked to finish 2nd in the Horizon League behind Butler. Just like KU, they scored 111 points against a patsy in their first game -- but held that team to 65, compared to Longwood's 75. So uh, watch out.

  1. And there they go.

Never seemed close, even when the score was tight at the start.

Three point shooting started out red hot, then dropped off. But maybe that's okay, since they played zone the whole time, and we hit early threes when we needed them?

Defense, especially in the paint, still a little disappointing--Valpo missed more open shots than they should have. But as Emily reminded me last night, defense is the area that should be weakest at the start of the season, and it's the area that Self is sure to work on and improve.

    All in all, a win.

Now, anyone else going to watch any of these? Hello?

  2. FORGET VALPO, HERE COMES N. TEXAS!!!

No, I'm not going to apologize for overhyping the Valpo threat, and I'm sure Self won't either. The results speak for themselves. Nice to see a solid win over a legit D-1 outfit.

Leave it to you and Self to complain about defense when we held them to 44 points.

(Yancy, I am committing myself to watching more of the games this year; once we're done with our move at the end of this month, I'll no longer be broke, and it'll be easier to get to the sports bar or get online.)

Due to the collapse of the mainstream media, good highlight reels are getting harder to come by. But I was able to hunt down these two from last night.

Speaking of the lamestream media, it's time once again for...

THE BAD KEEGAN QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "Part of what has made the Morris twins better in person to Drew than they looked on film and better players than Self figured they would develop into has to do with intangibles."

  3. Before I forget... I was watching the ESPN season preview the other night, and Digger Phelps was pretty dismissive of Kansas. Which has to be a good sign.

Doug Gottlieb likes us, though. He seemed pretty confident that Selby will play, and he said that by the end of the year this team could be better than last year's.

  5. Yikes. Hope this is one you'll be seeing, dgl, as there's a Plato lecture that'll keep me away until at least halftime...

Glad the Keegan feature has returned, by the way!
